Eccentrick Art Show 2009

This year's arthshow was the first one I have experienced first hand, and let me say it was a great experience. I think that the highlight of all art-related courses is always the artshow. All the hard work and art units all came down to the art show. For only five dollars you had access to all the creative pieces, which include: student-made videos, eccentrick art-pieces, and of course the mascot. The section of the art show that I really like is the video section. I loved watching the films, the videos include: Facebook Stalker and Just Like a Star. All the videos brought enjoyment and a whole new dimension to an eccentrick art show. But I think the visitors were more drawn to the art department and left the tech department in the dust. When I was doing security for the Tech area, it was so dead and empty that there was no need for me or any type of security. For next year, I think that we should evenly distribute the visitors so that all aspects of the artshow could be seen and that all the students' artworks would not go to waste. The artshow was overall fun and a reawrding experience.

Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy

Honestly, without technology I wouldn't be able to live, properly. It is true how technology these days was much better than what they had in the past. A few days ago we were sitting, having dinner, as usual, and my parents started talking about 'party lines'. I was like what in the world was that? My parents had gone on to say that it was an old technology where neighbours would use the same phone line to save money. Meaning each neighbour can hear the other by simply picking up the phone. This would be considered a 'stone-age' technology for some people. Today, telecommunications is so advance that we don't need that anymore.

I remember a few summers ago that we had a huge blackout thorughout the city of Toronto for two full days. It was hard for me. No electricity means that most of my technological neccesities would not work, I was upset. Parents lectured me how in the 'good ol' days' we didn't need technology and electricity to survive. I thought to myself, 'it's a miracle you two are alive'. Nonetheless the 48 hour blackout taught me that we often take technology for granted. With the fossil fuels running out and all the social issues related to technoogy taking place in recents times, it is no wonder that we must not take these things for granted.

If technology would disappear today, I would probably disappear with it also. My computer, mycellphone, my entertainment are such a big part of my life that when you take these things away it is like losing a child, I think, I don't know. One thing is for sure though, technology is a big part of our society and we should embrace it, for we don't know when it will be taken away. Hopefully it won't be in my lifetime.

Cell Phone Manners Matter!

It is ridiculous how society had come to be, in the sense of manners. Rather than progressing it seems that we are regressing and forgetting what our mama's taught us. I was at church the other day, during the blessing of the wine and bread, a cellphone rang. You wouldn't believe what happened next, the cell phone owner started talking! During the most important part of the mass! I was altar-serving that day and Father had asked me to escort the individual out. It was inconsiderate, the fact that we had several signs in the foyer before mass that encourage the congregation to turn off their cell phones off and not only that, but mass is the time for us to be one with God and to listen to His teachings. Since the signs did not seem to be effective follow these rules instead:

Rule # 1 - Never use your cellphones in quiet and meditative areas. These areas are meant for meditation and peace, not for socializing.

Rule # 2 - When signs ask for cellphones to be turned off, please be prompted to do so. The signs are not just there for decoration, they serve a purpose.

Rule # 3 - Put your cellphone on vibrate, that way no one is boether and you get to receive your oh so important calls.

Rule # 4 - When talking on your cellphone use your indoor voices, cellphones are not meant to be megaphones, talking softly and quietly is enough for the receiver to hear you.

Rules # 5 - Refrain from texting or calling when it is inappropriate to do so.

If you fail to comply with these five simple rules, then there is no helping you. These rules are meant to help society to progress not regress in the sense of cellphone manners.

Colossal U Ad Campaign

At first, when I saw the Colossal ad I thought it was ridiculous. What are they doing there? Making clones? But what their ad stands for is blown out of proportion. Their ads are basically saying that God made everyone the same. If that was the case, what's the point in living? In my personal opinion every school's philosophy should be that instructors should try to ge to know who their students are as individuals, and to nuture the minds and talents of each individual. Schools should be a place where students have oppurtunities to succeed and grow, both spritually and academically. A place wheren students can step into leadership roles. Students are meant to strive to find their individual strenghts, if not, this could lead to complications later in life. Students should be encouraged to do what they want.

When I went to their site; http://www.colossalu.com/ I finally realized that these ads were indeed a joke, go figure. These ads were meant to encourage student enrollment to Algoma University. I finally understood what they were trying to say. In the midst of the women in the video started to blab away at all these facts about Algoma University, I thought to myself 'Algoma doesn't seem that bad of a choice for my post-highschool years.' These ads were really effective in drawing in the audience's attention. To this day I still can't believe that I was all riled up about the ads' supposed philosiphies. I really would consider going to Algoma, solely on the fact that their ads were that effective. If they were this effective with their enrollment ads that really make syou think how clever they are with their teaching.

Gaming Gone Wild

When is enough? A Greek philosopher once said 'Everything you do in life is correct, unless it is done in excess' and I believe that this holds true in most cases, like gaming. Back in the day I was addicted to video games, and when I say addicted I mean addicted, this meant skipping dinner, staying home instead of going out, basically my social life consisted of sitting down in front of the computer and/or T.V.

Gaming is something that has been around for decades now, and it will probably continue to evolve. One game you might be shooting an alien in the head, and the next you might be tossing a car several yards away, it's these types of possibilites that appeal to most young people today, the ability to do something that you may not be able to do in real life.

Video games are like drugs; addictive and dangerous. Once you buy a game and get bored of it, you'll want more. The more time you spend, the more hazardous it is for your health. Your eyes will get damaged, you'll become overweight due to the lack of execise, and not to mention the pshycological effects it may have on your brain.

When is enough? Enough is when you realize that you need help, playing these video games are not self satisfying entities and that you are doing more damage to yourself than you've ever thought.

The Campaign Trail

The budlight commercial was re-incarnated as Barrack's campaign ad. His campaign commercial was very interesting in many ways. He was explaining many of today's social, economically and environmental problems. This commercial was able to portray enough issues, but kept that humour that the original ad had.

Both presidentsial candidates are repesctful in their own rights. John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona. He is the Republican nominee for president in the 2008 United States election. Barack Hussein Obama II was the junior United States Senator from Illinois from January 2005 until November 2008, when he resigned following his election to the presidency. It is clear that Obama's campaign was the best that the world has seen in recent years. He campaigned on popular sites and managed to win popularity among the 'college' vote by doing this. It is sad that we, Canadians, know more about our neighbour's election than our own. When PM Stephen Harper announced the Canadian election, it was overshadowed by the hype that was going on south of the border. This clearly indicates that the Obama's campaign was effective and that its influence was felt beyond American borders.

It was only a few hundred years ago that people of color were still enslaved, and now the world sees the first African-American candidate for presidency, might I add that he has a darn good chance to be the first president as well. If only Martin Luther King were here to witness the history making. If he does win, he has a big task ahead of him. Will he be able to live up to the hype that he created or will he pull a 'bush' on the American citizens and the global community? Only time will tell.
